Tomorrow is the Twilight Challenge 2019. It is my second time running this race and this time my frame of mind is much different. Last year, my goal was to run 50k; which I succeeded in doing so just under the time limit of 6-hours. This year, I am using the Twilight Challenge as a training run for my greater goal of running 50 miles (Hamster Wheel in November).
Funny, as I am writing this I receive an email from the race director about check-in and other fun logistics (like the weather and emergency phone number). The forecasted rain is expected to stop by the afternoon and we will be under partially moonlit skies. Yes!!
As I was saying, my mindset for this run is carefree and simple. When the clock strikes 5pm eastern time I put one foot in front of the other until 11pm. The challenge is not having a pacer. Last year both my coach (Kale) and my friend Janna (or “tan Shayla”, as my mom said when they first met:) ) paced me. They also fed me – both encouragement and food throughout the night. There was no way I would have been able to make the 50k milestone without their support. This will be a test of what I’ve learned from the past year.
Though its meant to be a training run for 6-hours, there’s a voice inside that wants me to have a distance goal in mind. Whatcha think…a marathon?
